UNICEF reports that at least 67 Palestinian children have been killed in Gaza since the US-brokered ceasefire began last month. This includes a baby girl killed in an Israeli air strike in Khan Younis on Thursday and seven other children killed the day before. UNICEF spokesman Ricardo Pires said the deaths occurred despite an agreed ceasefire, stressing that each child lost was a life and a dream cut short.

UNICEF reiterated that Palestinian children have suffered disproportionately throughout the war, estimating last month that 64,000 children have been killed or injured since October 2023. Save the Children added that in 2024 alone, an average of 475 children per month have sustained lifelong disabilities, including traumatic brain injuries and burns. Gaza has now become home to the largest group of child amputees in modern history.

Israel has also been accused of using starvation as a weapon of war, pushing the population into a severe humanitarian crisis. Children, already the most vulnerable, have died from hunger as food supplies continue to dwindle due to Israeli restrictions on aid.

Despite the ceasefire, the Israeli military launched a series of air strikes this week, saying its troops had been fired upon in Khan Younis. MSF reported treating women and children with open fractures and gunshot wounds caused by Israeli attacks, including quadcopter gunfire that injured a nine-year-old girl.

Witness accounts described scenes of devastation. A patient at al-Shifa Hospital, Mohammed Malaka, said he heard incoming missiles before losing consciousness. When he awoke, he found his father and three brothers lying on the ground, surrounded by dust, blood, and the screams of people as tents burned to ashes.

Meanwhile, Palestinians continue to struggle with the severe lack of humanitarian aid, including tents needed to survive the winter. UNICEF warned that many children are sleeping outside in flooded makeshift shelters, trembling in fear and cold. Pires stated that Gaza’s children have “no safe place” and that winter has become a “threat multiplier” as hundreds of thousands face freezing nights without heating or adequate shelter.
