Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, has once again issued a strong statement against the Gaza peace plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump. In an interview with British media outlet iPaper, she called the plan “the worst insult” she had ever witnessed. According to her, peace cannot be built on violations of international law, and Israel has long rejected the existence of the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Albanese also rejected the term “ceasefire” in the plan. She emphasized that the situation in Gaza is not a war between two countries, but rather an attack on a people who have lived under occupation and isolation since 1948. The iPaper report, written by correspondent Joe Walsh, added that there are concerns that the Trump administration's plan will continue the process of “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Since taking office in 2022, Albanese has often been subjected to political pressure and smear campaigns due to her stance demanding an end to the Israeli occupation. Although she works under a UN mandate, she does not officially represent the organization. However, her statement accusing Israel of genocide since the October 7, 2023 attack has made her the target of criticism from Israel and its allies.

In the interview, Albanese likened Israel's involvement in peace talks to a “terrible insult.” She compared it to letting the Hutus determine the future of the Tutsis after the Rwandan genocide, or discussing the future of the Jewish people with the Nazis. She also mentioned the statement by Trump administration ambassador-designate Brent Bozell, who wanted to pressure South Africa to withdraw its lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

As a result of her criticism, the United States imposed sanctions on Albanese last July. She was accused of being biased against Israel and was no longer allowed to access her office in New York, forcing her to work from South Africa. Albanese likened Washington's actions to “mafia methods” that destroy the reputation of those who fight for justice. She concluded the interview by emphasizing that giving Israel a role in determining Palestine's future is unreasonable, and called the world's failure to uphold justice for Palestine a moral test that the international system has yet to pass.
