From Ankara to Gaza: Türkiye Ready to Take a Central Role in Peace and Humanitarian Aid

The Turkish government has appointed the former head of the National Disaster Management Agency (AFAD), Mehmet Gulluoglu, as humanitarian aid coordinator for Gaza. This move signals that Ankara plans to take a greater role in peace efforts and aid distribution to the war-torn region.

Gulluoglu's appointment also signals that Turkey will be more active in diplomacy related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Over the past two years, Ankara has tended to distance itself from the negotiation process. Now, under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey has joined Qatar and Egypt in supporting the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.

According to sources from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gulluoglu has been officially appointed and immediately traveled to the region on Wednesday (16/10). He has been given the mandate to ensure that aid distribution runs quickly and effectively, including the construction of temporary shelters and reconstruction support in Gaza.

As coordinator, Gulluoglu will directly assess conditions on the ground to identify the most urgent needs, collaborate with UN agencies, and liaise with Egyptian and Jordanian authorities to ensure the smooth distribution of aid. He will also lead efforts to evacuate the wounded and strengthen Turkey's medical support for Gaza residents.

In addition, Ankara has expressed its readiness to participate in an international task force that will monitor the implementation of the ceasefire. The Turkish Ministry of Defense has confirmed that its armed forces are ready to engage in both military and civilian missions, depending on the needs on the ground.
