Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners are scheduled to be released today, Monday (10/13/2025), as part of a prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel. According to Reuters, the prisoners have boarded buses at a number of Israeli prisons for the release process. Of these, approximately 1,716 Gazans will be returned to the Gaza Strip and received at the Nasser Medical Complex, while the remaining 250 prisoners, who were previously serving life sentences, will be transferred to the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and some abroad.

Israel reports that 48 of its citizens are still being held hostage in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive. Meanwhile, according to human rights organizations and various media outlets, more than 11,100 Palestinians are still languishing in Israeli prisons. Many of them are reported to have been subjected to torture, starvation, and medical neglect, with some even dying in custody.

This prisoner exchange agreement is part of the first phase of a ceasefire that took effect on Friday at 12:00 Jerusalem time (09:00 GMT). The agreement was approved by the Israeli cabinet after lengthy discussions early Friday morning. This step is an important milestone toward easing tensions in the Gaza Strip after months of war.

The agreement is based on a peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, who played an active role in the mediation process. The plan emphasizes an end to the war, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the exchange of prisoners between the two sides. In addition, the delivery of humanitarian aid directly to Gaza is also a priority in this agreement.

With the start of this first phase, many hope that the ceasefire process will continue and pave the way for the restoration of civilian life in Gaza. However, the situation remains tense, given the continued presence of hostages, political prisoners, and the extensive damage left by the war in the region.
