Israel is living in a new illusion, according to Mihaël Milstein from Tel Aviv University. He believes that its leaders are trapped in a “false perception” that they can impose sovereignty over the West Bank, even though they have not learned from the tragedy of October 7, 2023. Ironically, the figure who previously failed to recognize the threat posed by Hamas is now leading a campaign of annexation that could damage relations with the United States and the international community.

Milstein believes that Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich's harsh statements against Saudi Arabia reflect Israel's arrogance and insensitivity towards the region. He warns that Israel's new paradigm is built on false assumptions—such as the belief that Donald Trump will always support Israel and that annexation can be carried out without major repercussions.

In reality, Trump and his running mate rejected annexation and proposed the release of Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, which was a slap in the face for Israel's right wing. According to Milstein, the religious right continues to view land ownership as a divine mandate, even though similar plans have failed in the past.

He also highlighted the failure of Israeli projects in Gaza, such as humanitarian programs, voluntary emigration, and the formation of a tribal militia to replace Hamas. All failed without evaluation, demonstrating a recurring pattern of “illusory” thinking.

Milstein concluded with a warning that ideas such as “two Gazas” only repeat old mistakes. If Israel imposes the unification of the West Bank without clear territorial boundaries, the country could fall into becoming a “bloody Balkan state.” He emphasized that a nation that does not learn from the past will repeat it at a higher cost.
