The European football body, UEFA, is reportedly preparing to hold a vote on suspending Israel's membership following the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.

According to a report by the Associated Press (AP) on Thursday (9/26/2025), a number of sources said that the majority of the 20 members of the UEFA Executive Committee are expected to support the suspension.

The sources who spoke to AP requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.

If approved, the decision will have a direct impact on the participation of Israeli national teams and clubs in international competitions under UEFA. Israel is scheduled to continue its 2026 World Cup qualifying matches next month, with away games against Norway and Italy.

It is unclear whether world soccer's governing body, FIFA, will support UEFA's move. Questions have been raised given the close relationship between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and former US President Donald Trump.

The Trump administration previously played a key role in the process of appointing the United States, Canada, and Mexico as hosts of the 2026 World Cup, including in terms of granting visas to players, officials, and hundreds of thousands of supporters who are expected to attend.

This is considered an important factor in the success of the tournament, according to an AP report.
