The United Nations (UN) reports that more than 300,000 people have moved from the southern to the northern Gaza Strip in recent days. This massive displacement occurred after restrictions on access to a number of areas were eased following the start of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. According to UN spokesman Farhan Haq, from Friday to Monday, there were nearly 310,000 movements of people from southern Gaza to the north and about 23,000 movements in other directions.

Haq explained that conditions on the ground now allow humanitarian teams to reach areas that had been isolated for months due to fighting. With access now open, the UN is able to deliver medical supplies and emergency aid to the areas most in need. In addition, teams are assessing road conditions that could still be dangerous due to unexploded ordnance.

To speed up the distribution of aid ahead of winter, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher allocated an additional US$11 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). This supplement complements the US$9 million in funding provided the previous week to ensure fuel supplies for life-saving services in Gaza. As a result, the total latest funding from CERF allocated for Gaza now stands at 20 million US dollars.

However, Fletcher warned that the distribution of essential aid cannot continue without new funding. He emphasized that fresh contributions from member states are urgently needed to ensure that food, clean water, health care, and shelter can continue to be delivered throughout the Gaza Strip. In the initial 60-day humanitarian plan, the UN and its partners are committed to delivering life-saving aid wherever it is needed.

Meanwhile, this ceasefire is part of a peace plan announced by US President Donald Trump on September 29. The first phase includes a cessation of hostilities, the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. The second phase includes the formation of a new government in Gaza without the involvement of Hamas, the formation of a multinational force, and the disarmament of the group. Since the Israeli offensive began in October 2023, more than 67,800 Palestinians mostly women and children have been killed, and Gaza is now virtually uninhabitable.
