The death toll from Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza has surpassed 70,000 people, according to the territory’s Health Ministry. Since the war began on October 7, 2023, more than 70,100 Palestinians have been killed and over 170,900 wounded, marking one of the deadliest chapters of the conflict. This rising number comes despite a US-brokered ceasefire that supposedly took effect last month.

On Saturday, two Palestinian children brothers Juma and Fadi Tamer Abu Assi were killed when an Israeli drone struck a group of civilians near al-Farabi School in Bani Suheila, east of Khan Younis. They were rushed to Nasser Medical Complex with critical injuries but did not survive. The attack occurred outside the “Yellow Line,” an area that Israel had agreed to avoid under the ceasefire terms.

Israeli forces continued launching ground, air, and naval attacks across Gaza the same day. In al-Qarara, northeast of Khan Younis, three Palestinians were injured due to artillery and air bombardment. Israeli aircraft also carried out strikes in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighbourhood, as well as the eastern areas of Rafah, escalating an already dire humanitarian situation.

The escalation follows another reported killing a day earlier, when Nasser Medical Complex confirmed that a Palestinian man was shot dead by an Israeli drone in Bani Suheila, also beyond the ceasefire’s designated boundary. These repeated violations have raised serious concerns regarding Israel’s commitment to the agreement.

Gaza’s Government Media Office director, Ismail al-Thawabta, stated that 535 Israeli violations of the ceasefire have been documented so far. He emphasized that Gaza’s humanitarian conditions are worsening rapidly, with massive destruction to infrastructure and essential services, leaving the population in an increasingly desperate state.
